Latest Catch Report…. 18th April 2010

The Volcanic Ash nightmare gave Daz Young and Kai Hannan an unexpected extra day on the water as they have been stranded in Spain unable to get flights back to England. The fine vain of fishing continued in the murky conditions to give the boys a well deserved ‘ton - up’ each, with the Delta section once again turning up the result. Daz kicked off the action with a hard scrapping 121lber with Kai later latching into a 107lber, giving the lads each the fish they had been after. A great end to a memorable (and expensive) jaunt to the Ebro!

Gary Carter rounded off a truly sensational trip with www.ebro-catfishing.com with another fantastic result, this time adding another 2 100lb plus cats to his tally, making it 7 in 6 days fishing! The first fish was taken in deep water well down into the Delta at around mid-day and was a hard fighting 104lber. The second one weighed in at 138lb, a perfect way to round off the trip, and was again caught well down in the Delta this time sitting shallower close to a depth feature. Mullet was the successful bait on both occasions, with settled overcast conditions again encouraging feeding.

The Delta is producing some good fish at present and here’s another one, no prizes for guessing the captor though. Gary Carter made it 5 100+ catfish in 5 consecutive days with this fine looking specimen of 126lb which took a mullet livebait fished in a deep section down the bottom end.

Gary Carter snared his 4th 100lb ebro catfish in 4 days with another 103lber from the Delta section close to the end of the session today. The fish had been unwilling to even look at our large mullet live bait offerings for most of the day, but switched on in a lightly fished area towards the end of the day with another fish of 43lb, a missed take and a couple of other chases.

With cloudy conditions and no discernible wind, plus the cages loaded with mullet, conditions looked favourable today, and the Delta section did not let us down. Gary Carter took a 3 fish haul with weights at 58, 78 and 103 with 2 other missed takes (including one by Al…shock!)

The most bizarre incident of the day occured during the fight with the 58, when another larger cat (around 80lb) grabbed the fish being played, so the angler was briefly into 2 fish! This phenomenon has only ever been witnessed once before…. when a 113 grabbed a 27! Unfortunately the other cat dropped off on this occasion denying us the chance foer some truly unique photos.

Gary Carter achieved his aim of a ‘one and a half’ for the week with this behemoth of 168lbs, taken today from a renowned deep water section of the Ebro close to Amposta. After a tough day which had yielded only a ridiculous sub 10lb kitten, the Essex based angler got a surprise take right at the bottom of the run and an epic battle ensued, with Gary’s Chimera cat rods being put through their paces by this brute of a catfish. The fish put a huge smile on Gary’s face but is surprisingly not a P.B for the angler, who took a fish of 173lb from a similar area a few years ago.

A sea change in conditions today with some murky weather arriving from the Mediterranean bringing rain along with it. The catfish of the lower Ebro often respond well to these conditions and today was no exception with Gary Carter taking this fat 104lber from the Big Cat Alley drift close to Amposta at around 17.30, a small mullet was the tempter.

Bill Benham finished an excellent short visit today with this impressive fish of 121lbs caught in a deep section in the Delta area. The fish smashed into a large mullet fished just off bottom and put up a back bending battle as it skulked in the depths before finally submitting to Bill’s rodding technique.

Other action on the day included a comical 15lber, which pursued a large mull across the river before finally grabbing it!

A quick 2 day catfishing jaunt for Bill Benham got off to an excellent start today when this 104lber snatched a live mullet close to the chicken factory up river from Amposta. The fish put up a very feisty scrap with some searing runs in the flowing water.

Overcast conditions to begin with looked ideal, and this proved to be the case when early in the session Chris Booth whacked into a hungry 112lber upstream of the Amposta chicken factory. This huge Ebro catfish is another Personal best for Chris, who has upped his biggest each day of the trip.

Some ugly weather, windy and raining hard in the afternoon, made drifting conditions difficult and the fish unfortunately switched off for the remainder of the session.
